Mr. Pig’s Smokery

Overview:

Studio M Architects partnered with a 40-year-old barbecue establishment, formerly known as “Mr. Pig’s Stuff,” to reimagine their concept at a new location. The comprehensive project covered both architectural interior design and complete rebranding, transforming the restaurant into “Mr. Pig’s Smokery and Kitchen.” This refined barbecue destination specializes in smoked meats including beef, brisket, and chicken, complemented by an innovative bar program featuring smoked cocktails.

Project Goals:

Brand Evolution: Transform “Mr. Pig’s Stuff” into “Mr. Pig’s Smokery and Kitchen” while honoring their 40-year heritage

Elevated Experience: Create a design-forward barbecue restaurant that moves beyond the typical “paper towel on the plate” casual approach

Distinctive Bar Program: Design a sophisticated bar area showcasing their specialty smoked cocktails

Indoor-Outdoor Integration: Develop functional outdoor dining with a patio, pergola, and seasonal bar

Brand Identity: Integrate cohesive design elements that reinforce the smokehouse concept

Design and Implementation:

Layout and Spatial Planning:

  • Main dining area with tables placed on darker flooring sections creating a visual “rug” effect
  • Private dining room for intimate gatherings
  • Bar area featuring an oversized wood canopy holding bottles and discreetly integrated TVs
  • Outdoor patio with pergola structure
  • Seasonal outdoor bar designed for summer and winter operation

Material Selection and Atmosphere:

  • Rough-sawn woods throughout providing authentic smokehouse character
  • Leather furniture and wall finishes adding sophistication and contrast
  • Stacked wood elements reinforcing the culinary theme
  • Farmhouse-inspired lighting fixtures enhancing the rustic aesthetic
  • Custom wood bar top with comfortable edge detail for dining and leaning

Branding and Thematic Elements:

  • Large custom “Smokehouse” signage as a central design feature
  • New “pig in a barrel” logo integrated throughout the restaurant
  • Unique pig-head coat hooks under the bar for functional brand expression
  • Branded table setups featuring homemade barbecue sauces
  • Thoughtfully balanced material palette mixing rustic and refined elements

Challenges:

  • Integrating necessary TVs without compromising the dining atmosphere
  • Creating a flexible outdoor space suitable for Minnesota’s variable climate
  • Balancing authentic barbecue atmosphere with elevated design expectations
  • Transitioning loyal customers to a new brand identity while attracting new patrons

Outcome:

The completed Mr. Pig’s Smokery and Kitchen successfully transformed a long-standing barbecue establishment into a design-forward dining destination that honors its roots. The thoughtful combination of rough-sawn woods with leather elements created an environment that feels both authentic and sophisticated. Custom touches – from the “Smokehouse” signage to the playful pig-head coat hooks – reinforce the concept throughout the guest experience. The indoor and outdoor dining areas provide versatile options for guests, while the distinctive bar program has found its proper showcase. The project represents the perfect evolution of a beloved legacy brand into a contemporary dining concept that appeals to today’s design-conscious diners without losing its barbecue soul.
